…a large-scale artwork created by Multiply, a growing collective of Adelaide women.

Comprised of over 500 hand-crocheted squares, the giant pixelated eye comes into focus at a distance; while up close the work of many hands is evident in the varying patterns and textures.

Born out of a desire to do something practical for the people of Christchurch after the February 2011 earthquake the eye bears witness to the devastation, while visualising a better future.

Like the woolen threads it is crafted from, it brings together individuals, artists and communities – strengthening ties and supporting the work of Gap Filler, a creative urban regeneration initiative that is taking art and community to Christchurch’s vacant city spaces.

“I traveled to Portugal and Berlin during the process and had to learn to do plain square very quicklyand found time in the Portuguese mountains, Porto beach and Berlin to do 25 squares. It was so nice to think that I was so far from home but with a communal project keeping me close.”
